Sargassum algae in 2021 and 2022
The world's largest sargassum algal bloom, known as the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt, now stretches 8,850 kilometers from West Africa to the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, according to Science magazine.
And while there used to be an identifiable kelp season from May to December, sargassum kelp arrives earlier, stays longer, and kelp beds are larger.
This increases the likelihood of encountering unsightly brown algae on a Caribbean vacation.
